Traveling to Providence and Brown University

By car

Providence is conveniently located on Interstate 95 in northern Rhode Island. Please bear in mind that street parking can sometimes be difficult to find in the immediate campus area, and many spaces have time limits of two or three hours. Longer-duration street parking can often be found on the streets north of campus (Bowen, Lloyd, Keene, and Barnes) and on the streets located to the east of Hope Street (Cooke, Governor, Manning, and Benevolent). Please be aware that the city of Providence prohibits all street parking between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.

Visitors from the Boston area, New Hampshire, and Maine should take 95 South to Providence and use Exit 22A. Follow Memorial Boulevard approximately one quarter mile, then left onto Washington Street. Follow Washington Street across the river and up the hill. The street will turn into Waterman Street as it continues up the hill, and leads directly to Brown’s main campus.

Visitors from New York City and southern Connecticut should take 95 North to Providence and then merge onto Interstage 195 East. Use Exit 2 (India Point/Wickenden Street) from 195. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp, then turn right at the next stop sign onto Gano Street. Continue north on Gano until the intersection with Angell Street. Turn left onto Angell and drive approximately half a mile to reach Brown’s campus.

Visitors from western Massachusetts, Vermont, and upstate New York may find it most convenient to use Interstate 90 until reaching Worcester, Massachusetts. Then follow Rte. 146 South from Worcester to Providence; it will merge with I-95 South just north of downtown Providence. Use Exit 22 from Interstate 95. Follow Memorial Boulevard approximately one quarter mile, then left onto Washington Street. Follow Washington Street across the river and up the hill. The street will turn into Waterman Street as it continues up the hill, and leads directly to Brown’s main campus.
