Use of the who attribute to represent the speaker in a dramatic text, and to link individual speeches to the cast list.

It is often useful to be able to identify the speaker of a dramatic speech unambiguously, and yet there are many cases where the printed speaker label in the source text is missing or ill-suited for this purpose. The printed label may be abbreviated (often in varying ways) or misspelled, or it may even be incorrect. To make a clear, unambiguous identification of who is speaking, the TEI provides the who attribute, which is encoded on the sp element (see the example below). The who attribute is a pointer which points to a specific role listed in the cast list, thereby identifying the speaker. In cases where the speaker label printed in the text is not considered important in itself (e.g. as textual evidence), the speaker label may be omitted from the transcription and the who attribute used alone. In this case, the display presented to the user might generate a regularized speaker name based on the who attribute, perhaps drawing the name from the cast list.

The TEI does not require the use of the who attribute, but the WWP recommends it for any project in which the analysis of character actions or interactions would be useful. For instance, one could well imagine examining which characters speak to one another (or do not do so), comparing characters’ rhetorical patterns or word usage, or narrowing searches to specific characters’ speeches, none of which would be reliably possible without the who attribute.
