Although the intention of this Guide is to encourage text encoding projects to seek and encode the motive behind all renditional phenomena, for any project which takes rendition seriously there will always be cases where you wish to capture a renditional fact for which there is no structural cause (or at least none which you are prepared to represent). For these cases, there is the hi element, which simply means this word or phrase is highlighted and we’re not saying why.
