For this session, we’d like you take 30 minutes to either:
- Choose one of the assignment ideas from Session 6 and write it up more
fully (feel free to further adapt it!), or
- Develop a case study or brief that describes how word embedding
models might be pedagogically useful, aimed at an audience that is relevant
to you (for instance, faculty colleagues, your dean or chair, a curriculum
committee, etc.)
For the first option:
- Include a description aimed at students, and some basic instructions for
completing the assignment or activity
- Include some thoughts on assessment, if applicable
- Include some thoughts on how the assignment might be scaffolded or
broken up/phased, and a preliminary list of the supporting materials that
would be necessary
For the second option:
- Include information about the audience being addressed and what
intervention you’re trying to make
- Include a list of the key points that such a case study or brief would
need to include in order to be effective
Then, for the next 20 minutes, each person pass your materials to someone else in
your group, and take 5 minutes to read and make comments, and then 5 minutes to
share and discuss your feedback. Finally, pass the materials one more time and
repeat the process. Our goal is for each person to have a chance to reflect on the
other group members’ work, and receive feedback from the other members, so feel
free to improvise to achieve this! In reading each other’s work, consider the
following questions:
For assignments/curricular materials:
- How comfortable would students
be following the instructions? Is there additional information that could be
helpful?
- What makes this assignment engaging and rewarding, and
what could make it more so?
- What supporting materials do you
think would help this assignment/activity succeed?
- What kinds
of student outcomes does the assignment seem to be aiming at, and
producing?
- What kinds of courses would this assignment be most
effective in? How might it be adapted to other contexts?
For case studies/scenarios:
- How did the case study help you to
understand word embedding models and their use in pedagogical
contexts?
- What additional information could be useful in making
this even more persuasive to its intended audience?
- What kind
of portrayal of word embedding models does the assignment or case study
succeed in conveying?
- What are the key takeaways you get about
word embedding models from this case study?
