Session 16: Hands-on practice

For this session, please pick one of the following options to explore.

Option 1: Make a data prep and model training plan:

• Outline your next steps in preparing your data and training a better model to support your research exploration
• Flag any questions or things you don’t yet know how to do
• Make a plan for the specific parameters you want to adjust, and the reasons for each one (what impact do you expect it will have?)
• Exchange plans with your partner, and then take some time to discuss them.

Option 2: Query one or more of your models, following the challenges. Some additional tips:

• Keep a query notebook so that you can remember what you tried
• Develop a validation plan for your corpus: what are the kinds of tests that will reveal model quality for your material?
• Export any queries that seem especially illuminating
• Make some notes on what kinds of questions you can investigate with this method, and what kinds of things you can’t.
